A country road curves away through a stand of bare hardwoods, low winter light throwing long shadows across the packed snow. One maple still holds a cluster of rust-red leaves, a last note of autumn caught against the white. A brass identification plate on the reverse, original to the piece, records the title and the date: 1950.
About Frank Panabaker
Frank Panabaker (1904–1992) trained under McGillivray Knowles before attending the Ontario College of Art and New York’s Grand Central School of Art. He held his first professional exhibition in 1927 and remained one of a small number of Canadian painters able to support himself by his art alone, through the Depression and after. Sara Delano Roosevelt purchased one of his paintings as a gift for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and it hung in the White House for years. He became an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy, a member of the Allied Artists of America, a trustee of the National Gallery of Canada, and was inducted into the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction in 1996. Panabaker worked independently of the Group of Seven, describing himself instead as “the Group of One.”
