Dave Hind Copper Snow Hamilton Commission

David Hind Commission

BRANTFORD ARTIST DAVID HIND COMMISSIONED TO CREATE A MURAL FOR THE STONEY CREEK OFFICE OF FLYNN CANADA LTD.

A vibrant new mural by David Hind has been unveiled in the foyer of the Stoney Creek office of Flynn Canada Ltd.

David Hind's mural Copper Snow, Hamilton, is fabricated from recycled aluminum and riveted painted metal cut outs. It depicts Hamilton Bay lined by trees, high rise apartment buildings and industrial structures with silhouettes of steel mills in the background. The scene is backed by a grid with etchings of mineral and snow crystals.

Paul Manchisi, Vice President Operations for Flynn at Stoney Creek praised the mural as particularly relevant to the mandate of the firm that is Canada's leading contractor for the construction of building envelopes. “We wanted the piece itself to represent the region,” said Mr. Manchisi and Hind's “use of reclaimed metals, was particularly important to us as it parallels our company's daily practice of recycling metals.”

David Hind who holds a BFA from the University of Western Ontario calls himself a “thingmaker”. He creates innovative two-dimensional works of art, monumental sculpture and novel musical instruments. Hind says that his artistic practice is based on the reclamation of materials. He finds his inspiration in searching through industrial cast offs that suggest to him new forms. “I am interested,” he says, “in the interaction of the industrial and the natural that occurs during the processes of discovering structures in discarded materials and reforming them into evocative images.”

The mural by David Hind at Flynn Canada, Stoney Creek, says Paul Manchisi, “gives us a wow factor in our entrance foyer that presents our staff and clients with a connection to the local artistic community and to the geography of the region and engages them in conversation.”

Repurposed aluminum collage, depicting contrasting layers of Hamilton Bay revitalization, aging industrialization and the changing environment.

The commission was arranged through Creations Art Gallery in Ancaster. Creations Art Gallery represents a number of highly respected regional artists including David Hind. His work is regularly on display at the gallery.
