Audrey Bazinet Biography

Audrey Bazinet – Canadian Abstract Painter

Audrey Bazinet In Gallery PhotoAudrey Bazinet is a Canadian abstract painter originally born in Montreal and now based in the Outaouais region of Quebec, where she has lived and worked for over twenty years. She maintains a studio, surrounded by forests, mountains, and water—elements that strongly influence her work. Deeply connected to nature and music, Bazinet’s paintings explore movement, breath, and inner landscapes through acrylic on canvas.

Artistic Approach

At the core of Audrey Bazinet’s artistic practice is the concept of circular breathing, a technique used by musicians to sustain a continuous flow of breath. Bazinet translates this idea visually, allowing breath to become gesture and gesture to become abstract form and colour. Her paintings are created intuitively, guided by a meditative state where each movement reflects presence, rhythm, and emotion.

Influences & Process

Bazinet is strongly influenced by traditional Chinese painting techniques, where the artist’s state of mind is considered the source of life within each brushstroke. Inspired by artists such as Zao Wou-Ki and Fabienne Verdier, her work balances spontaneity and intention. She paints using her entire body, allowing movement, breath, and music to guide the creative process.

Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, often in large-scale formats, Bazinet creates compositions that convey lightness, flow, and spatial depth. The physical engagement with the canvas gives her work a sense of motion that extends beyond the surface.

Themes & Environment

A recurring horizon line appears throughout Bazinet’s abstract paintings, subtly referencing landscapes formed through intuition rather than direct observation. These inner landscapes reflect emotional states and invite contemplation. Water plays a central role in her work—the Gatineau River, Ottawa River and the St. Lawrence River, all located nearby, are a recurring source of inspiration and renewal.

During the summer months, the river provides a sense of balance and healing, while winter mountain hikes fuel her creative energy. Water, breath, and music coexist within her compositions, forming a unified visual language. Though deeply personal, her paintings remain open to interpretation, allowing viewers to discover their own narratives within the work.

Education, Exhibitions & Collections

Audrey Bazinet holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Design (2009), receiving special mention for the creativity of her technique. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada and the United States and is represented in private and public collections. She has also received recognition through awards and public art acquisitions, including first place in an art acquisition competition.
