Joan Armour Biography

Painting for more than 25 years, Joan has studied at the Dundas Valley School of Art, and the North Hills Art Center in Pennsylvania.  Joan has a small studio located in the Oak Ridges Moraine, in Ontario. Her current scenes are based on the terrains in the Blue Mountains, Grey Highlands and Oak Ridges Moraine areas of Ontario.

Her works have been exhibited throughout North America in galleries, publications, private and corporate collections. She has also been an active member of various Artists’ Societies and Groups.

When painting landscapes I can feel the energy in nature which allows me the means to capture our natural beauty. This motivates me to use a very loose ‘painterly style’ with good movement and shapes. My quick brush strokes, strong use of colour combined with limited values and detail gives my work a distinctive style.

When painting I use the ‘en plein air’ approach selecting the Oak Ridges Moraine, Collingwood and most recently Killarney as some of my favorite locations. Daily, in all seasons I enjoy taking my brushes, paints and easel outside in order to capture the natural light.  When selecting the subject I immediately look for good design and interesting light and shadows.  These paintings begin as sketches and the ones that I find most moving are developed into larger works.

In past I have been seen as an impressionist painter but am now experimenting with an expressionist style showing obvious shapes and forms.  Detail isn’t necessary and can be provided by the viewer’s imagination; in this way the viewer makes their own contribution to my work.

Enjoy,
