The eye goes straight to the still centre, a dark blue pupil left almost untouched, then rides the burst outward. Strokes of red, orange, yellow, green and white radiate in every direction, short near the core and longer as they fly, each one tapering like a spark losing speed. Farther out, the burst breaks into orbiting dots of yellow, green and orange that drift across the open blue, and a few looping green threads swing wide of the whole formation like a hand tracing the afterglow. However long you look, the painting keeps its charge; the composition is all release, with the calm held exactly at the middle.
Colour, Texture, and Technique
The ground is a saturated royal ultramarine, and everything above it is keyed to sing against that depth: scarlet and orange, sun yellow, spring green, sky blue and pure white. The detail view reveals a glossy, almost liquid surface — each radiating stroke laid on thickly enough to hold its ridge, with drops and spatter sitting proud of the sheen. It is Aro’s thrown-and-pulled technique at its most exuberant, and it is easy to see why her work has found its way into notable collections, Michelle Obama’s among them.
