Le grand frisson — The Great Thrill — is an original acrylic painting by Canadian abstract artist Aro, a 30″ by 30″ square worked almost entirely in metallics and neutrals over a black ground. From a distance the square reads as shimmer: thousands of short vertical touches of white, cream, tan and copper suspended on near-black, dense at every edge, with no empty corner to rest in. Step closer and the composition declares itself. Across the middle of the canvas, horizontal skeins of white and copper whip through the vertical field, crossing and looping like sparks travelling along a wire. This central band is where the thrill lives — the eye rides it left and right, then drifts back into the calm columns above and below. The longer you look, the more the verticals resolve into individual characters: a run of ivory here, a caramel drip there, a black interval between them holding everything in tempo.
Colour, Texture, and Technique
The palette is a study in warm neutrals against dark: ivory, cream and soft white do most of the singing, over an ensemble of tan, caramel and warm grey, all suspended on near-black. The glint comes from metallic copper and bronze, thrown in raised looping lines and thick beads that change with every shift of the room’s light. Aro builds the surface in layers — vertical palette-knife strokes first, in the expressive all-over manner she draws from Riopelle, then drips pulled downward, then the horizontal skeins flung across last — and finishes it under a deep gloss. In the detail view the paint stands in true relief, each white droplet a small raised dome.

Because it holds its drama inside a neutral palette, this square goes where colourful abstraction cannot.
