Je me sens inspirée — I Feel Inspired — is an original acrylic painting by Canadian abstract artist Aro, on a 36″ by 30″ canvas that behaves like a sunset over a wild meadow. The title is a first-person confession, and the painting keeps its word: this is what the moment of inspiration looks like from inside — heat overhead, colour rushing upward, and everything ordinary falling into shadow at your feet. Aro left a corporate career to paint full time, and few of her canvases argue the case for that leap as directly as this one.

The canvas divides itself like a horizon. Across the top burns a field of tangerine and hot orange, worked with enough yellow that it seems lit from behind. From there the eye slides down into the painting’s crowded middle, where magenta and crimson tangle with flares of pure yellow and looping black gestures thrown across the surface — the most animated passage of the work, all upward motion, like grasses reaching into the light. The lower third goes dark: a dense stand of violet and aubergine knife strokes, packed vertically, through which single stems of pink and one or two threads of yellow still climb. Read bottom to top, it is dusk rising into fire; read top to bottom, it is light sinking its roots into the dark.
Colour, Texture, and Technique
The palette runs the full length of a warm spectrum: tangerine, hot orange and golden yellow across the top, an insistent middle band of magenta, fuchsia and crimson, and a deep foundation of violet and aubergine, punctuated throughout by black thrown lines and beads of paint. The vertical knife strokes in the lower half are laid so thickly they read as individual blades; over them Aro drips and flings looping filaments in the all-over manner she inherits from Pollock, then seals the whole under a wet-look gloss. The detail view shows the surface glinting like enamel, black droplets standing whole and round where they landed.
