Then the margins pull you outward: quiet bands of type, column rules and running heads from an antique volume on butterflies and moths, with stray droplets escaping into the white space like punctuation flung loose. The painting keeps trading places with itself, first an image over a text, then a text holding up an image, and that exchange is exactly its subject.

The palette is graphic and warm at once. Ink black and charcoal grey do the heavy lifting, threaded with silver and bright white, while generous drops of copper and bronze glow against the cream and parchment tones of the aged pages. The detail view shows how sculptural the surface is: fat beads of paint sitting proud of the paper, glossy black loops thrown in a single gesture across matte text, drips that thin and feather as they descend. It is a Pollock-inflected technique scaled to an intimate square, layered so the printed words show through precisely where Aro wants them to speak.
