Description

Patricia Gagic Smooth Jazz Transition 40×30

Smooth Jazz Transition by Patricia Karen Gagic is an original oil on canvas measuring 40″ high × 30″ wide. The title is a musician’s word — the transition, the bar where one key hands the tune to another — and the painting is built exactly there. Smoky dusk tones above, cooler quiet below, and moving between them a warm amber line that behaves the way a horn phrase does in a dim room: unhurried, certain, gone before you can hold it.

Original Abstract Oil Painting by Patricia Karen Gagic

The upper canvas is night-club air: mauve-brown smoke etched with fine, branching scratches, copper-orange glowing through like stage light on haze, small glints of teal and cobalt buried in the weave. Through the middle runs the melody — amber, honey, and soft orange pulled in long horizontal phrases, circling once like a repeated figure. Below, the painting cools into grey-lavender flats, and two white, feathered gestures land mid-canvas like grace notes — the only bright attacks in an otherwise legato surface. A final murmur of yellow and a slip of blue close the bottom edge, the last bar before silence.

Colour, Texture, and Technique

The palette is built on smoky mauve, brown, and grey-lavender, carried by amber, honey, and copper-orange and sparked with white, teal, and cobalt notes. Gagic layers thin tonal veils, then scratches and incises fine lines through them — grooves in a record — and drops the white gestures in wet, so they feather at the edges. A gloss finish gives the whole surface its after-hours shine. The painting is signed in red at the lower right.

Where This Artwork Works Best

At 40″ × 30″, Smooth Jazz Transition was made for rooms where evenings happen: a music room, a den with a good speaker and a better chair, a dining room lit low. It settles beautifully among walnut, leather, brass, and deep-toned walls, and it rewards the kind of light that changes through the night. For a collector of Canadian contemporary abstraction, it is the collection’s standard, played late.
