Just about everyone who has seen this painting commented on the birds feeding at the waters edge, when my focus was on the sunset. Normally I do not paint birds or animals nor put them in my paintings. I think it is important for artists to know the habits and the anatomy of animals if they choose to paint them. In this painting the birds are at a distance, in dim light, so I feel I was able to capture their presence with a few simple brushstrokes, enough to make them look convincing, bring scale and additional interest to the piece.
