Description

Aro Enjoy the ride 18×18

Enjoy the ride is an original acrylic painting by Canadian abstract artist Aro, an 18″ by 18″ square with a secret at its foundation: the ground beneath the paint is vintage sheet music, collaged onto the canvas and left to show through. Staves, chord names and scraps of French lyric peek out between the brushwork, so the painting carries an actual score inside it. The title sets the tone. This is Aro at her most playful — a small work about motion, rhythm, and taking the trip for its own sake.

Original Abstract Acrylic Painting by Aro

A ragged-edged field of white and printed paper floats on a black surround, like a page pinned to the dark. Down this page run dense vertical strokes — rust, orange, warm grey, cream, black — packed side by side like a crowd, or like notes crowding a staff. Across the middle, everything changes direction. Thrown lines of black loop and snap horizontally through the verticals, and a single skein of metallic copper rides straight through the centre of the canvas from edge to edge. That copper line is the ride itself: the eye grabs it, follows it through the traffic, and comes out the other side. Below it, the vertical rhythm resumes and settles toward the torn bottom edge, where the black ground takes over and a small copper signature closes the piece.

Colour, Texture, and Technique

The palette is warm and graphic at once: rust red and burnt orange carry the melody over a chorus of cream, ivory and warm grey, with black supplying both the surrounding field and the staccato dots and dashes scattered throughout. The flash comes from metallic copper, laid on in thick raised skeins that catch real light as you move past. The detail view shows how physical the surface is — buttery dabs of paint standing in relief over the collaged score, drips pulled downward, thrown lines sitting on top like wire — all sealed under a high gloss. Collage, controlled drips and thrown paint in one small square: a compact inventory of Aro’s layered technique.

Where This Artwork Works Best

Small squares are the most sociable format in a collection. In the room view it hangs above a walnut sideboard against a warm cream wall, holding its own beside travertine and greenery — a natural fit for mid-century and organic-modern rooms. It is right at home in a music room, a study, a front hall, or a kitchen sitting area, and it makes a sharp counterpoint in a gallery wall of quieter pieces. The black-and-copper palette flatters wood tones especially well. For a collector beginning with Aro, this is an inviting first acquisition; for one who already owns her large canvases, it is the witty aside.
