Patricia Gagic From Ancient Beginnings 36×48
From Ancient Beginnings by Patricia Karen Gagic is an original oil on canvas measuring 36″ high × 48″ wide — the one horizontal canvas in her 2026 collection, and it uses every inch of that width. The painting reads like geology remembering itself: a dark mass of stone shouldering up out of drifting mist, first light striking its faces, and above it a sky that has just begun to turn turquoise. The title points backward past memory, and the painting follows.
Original Abstract Oil Painting by Patricia Karen Gagic
The left half of the canvas is weather — smoky blue-grey washed with lavender, thinning toward a pale horizon. Out of it, along the right, rises the headland: black and slate planes stacked like split rock, their edges dragged with chalk-white so the whole mass seems lit from one side. Over and around the stone, Gagic draws long, wiry loops of white line — part script, part fishing line cast across time — that float free of the rock and stitch the mist to it. Small glints of yellow-green flicker at the waterline, and a band of turquoise and cerulean opens across the top like the first morning.
Colour, Texture, and Technique
The palette is built on slate blue, smoke grey, charcoal black, and chalk white, drifted with lavender and crowned by turquoise and cerulean, with small glints of yellow-green low in the composition. Gagic sets two techniques against each other: the atmosphere is blended soft and seamless, while the rock is built in sculptural, faceted strokes that hold hard edges; the looping line work is laid on last, thin and continuous, like an inscription. The painting is signed in red at the lower left.
Where This Artwork Works Best
At 36″ × 48″, this is the collection’s natural over-the-sofa and over-the-console painting — a wide format that also commands a bedroom wall, a dining room, or the long wall of a boardroom. Its blue-grey calm suits coastal, contemporary, and transitional interiors alike, and the turquoise band lifts beautifully against white, sand, and grey walls. For a collector of Canadian contemporary abstraction, it brings the collection’s deepest sense of time.
