Patricia Gagic The Observers 40×30
The Observers by Patricia Karen Gagic is an original oil on canvas measuring 40″ high × 30″ wide. Who observes whom? A thin band of indigo night crosses the very top; everything below is moving water rendered in greys, blacks, and whites — and floating in that current, pale rectangular presences that refuse to drift with it. They hold position. They watch. The longer you stand with the painting, the harder it is to shake the sense that the attention runs both ways.
Original Abstract Oil Painting by Patricia Karen Gagic
The composition is built in lateral bands. Under the indigo sky, a dark ridge runs the width of the canvas, streaked with unexpected chartreuse-yellow and lilac threads — distant signals, or bioluminescence caught at the horizon — with small turquoise glints buried in the black. Below it, the water: long palette-knife passages of grey over grey, dragged and feathered until the whole field seems to slide. The observers themselves are slabs of warm white, knifed on in short vertical stacks, catching more light than anything around them. Toward the bottom the palette warms faintly to brown-grey, like shallows over sand.
Colour, Texture, and Technique
The palette is built on grey, black, and warm white, capped by deep indigo and signalled with chartreuse, lilac, and turquoise threads. This is one of Gagic’s most knife-driven surfaces — scraped, stacked, and dragged rather than brushed — so the paint carries a slate-like, geological texture under its gloss finish. The painting is signed in red at the lower right.
Where This Artwork Works Best
At 40″ × 30″, The Observers is the collection’s most architectural painting — a natural fit for modern interiors built on stone, concrete, steel, and monochrome palettes. It brings quiet tension to an office, a hallway, or a minimalist living room, and its restrained colour lets it live where bolder palettes would argue with the room. For a collector of Canadian contemporary abstraction, it is the one that watches back.
